A Voluntary Aided Academy

Year 7

Music is one of the four Art subjects that students experience as part of the Arts Carousel at St Mary's. Over the course of the year students will study three different units of work, in which they experience different styles and genres and develop listening and appraising, performing and composing skills.

  1. The Elements of Music- Students are introduced to, explore, identify, and develop an understanding of musical elements.
  2. Music from Around the World- Students investigates and perform music from around the world, developing an understanding as to why music is an important part of a variety of cultures.
  3. Across the Universe- Students examine how composers and performers have written and performed music to describe planets, characters and atmosphere. There is a strong focus on the use of music in film and television in this project.

During music lessons students can expect to take part in a variety of activities. You will develop your musical skills, knowledge and understanding through performing, composing, listening and appraising tasks, whilst using a variety of instruments and singing to support these. Students are always encouraged to perform in every lesson.

Within Music lessons students acquire and develop important personal and social skills which can be used in a variety of non musical activities and subjects; as well as in everyday use outside of school. Music allows students to grow in confidence, communicate with others and become a valuable team member.

Students will be required to do homework to help support the learning they have experienced during their lesson. These may include listening tasks, research tasks or an Arts Independent Project (A.I.P) which are long extended projects which students do over a series of weeks.

We have a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities for students to get involved in. These are a great way of students reinforcing and developing skills and knowledge they have learnt in lessons as well as building social skills, self confidence, meeting new people or even just having fun.

You can also learn an instrument with one of our specialist teachers who come in every week; this could be Guitar, Bass Guitar, Brass, Woodwind, Strings, Drums and Singing. If you are interested in learning one of these instruments and developing your musical skills even further, come and speak to us and we will give you all the information you need to know.

There are a great many musical performances over the year for Year 7 students to get involved in including assemblies, concerts and the annual college show. As a department we are also always open to new ideas and suggestions for extra curricular groups and activities and will try and support student's personal musical interests.

The Music Department believes that everyone can achieve in music and you will be encouraged to do so.
