Key Stage 3

Students will learn either French or German and are taught in mixed ability groupings in year 7. They are then set according to ability in years 8 and 9 which enables the students to progress at their own pace and with confidence.

Students study topics which enable them to talk about themselves, their house and home and the world around them, whilst also following a programme of grammar which will give them the confidence to manipulate the language independently.

The learning programme covers the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing and students are assessed on their ability in all of these skills. There are also weekly homeworks, including regular vocabulary tests, which are designed to consolidate and extend the learning of the students. The Key Stage 3 curriculum provides the necessary grounding in vocabulary and grammar skills to enable students to access a Modern Language GCSE.

Cultural experience is a high priority, so students will also study French or German film and have penpal links with students abroad. Our successful EBacc trip in October of year 9 gives students the opportunity to practise their skills in an authentic environment.
