Year 8

In Year 8 students will continue to develop their skills in reading, speaking and listening and writing. Students will begin the year studying 20th Century North American prose texts such as ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and ‘Of Mice and Men’.  Students will consider the historical context of these texts in order to extend their wider understanding and knowledge of the texts.  Throughout the year, students will cover a range of literary heritage texts such as ‘Beowulf’ and consider how language has changed over time.  Students will also study plays such as ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Ostrich Boys’ and consider the comparisons between these texts.

In year 8 students have the opportunity to further progress as independent readers through weekly reading lessons in the library. During this time they have access to a range of reading materials and are able to monitor and assess their own reading through the use of the Accelerated Reader programme.
